Return to Thailand!

I’m back in Thailand!

Honestly, I wasn’t even sure I’d be leaving the country when I took off for Niagara Falls/Seattle/Hawaii. I had entered a competition for bloggers to visit Thailand for medical tourism and I sort of forgot about it. Just before I arrived in Hawaii I was notified that I was one of 12 finalists and would be flown to Thailand.

…and here I am!

The trip is sponsored by the Tourism Authority of Thailand to increase awareness of Thailand as a medical tourism destination. The 12 bloggers drew lots and were sent to various locations throughout Thailand: Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket, Bangkok and Ko Samui. I drew the most medical intensive trip in Bangkok and traded with a woman who works in the medical area for the trip to Ko Samui. I’m not complaining.

I’m writing this in Ko Samui where I just landed about an hour ago. I’ll be here for three days before returning to Bangkok.

Every time I’ve been in Thailand I’ve considered going to the dentist here or look into getting LASIK surgery done on my eyes, so this was a decision to come here and check it out. At a minimum, I’ll get my teeth cleaned while I’m here.

Also, because I’m here, I’ve decided to just stay in Thailand for a few weeks to do some of the work I was going to do in Hawaii. I’ll be here until the middle of December when I will start to work my way back to Wisconsin to be with my family for Christmas. I’ll be returning via Tokyo, Honolulu and San Francisco.

If you are in Bangkok the next few weeks, please drop me a line.

sn’t Thailand where all good bloggers migrate to for the (northern) winter? Seems like lots of people are in Bangkok at the moment – very hard to get work done!

  4. Chris says:

Congrats on making it over to Thailand! I was beginning to think you never actually wrote in here, haha.

  5. Mosh says:

*jealous* I got my eyes done in Bangkok (PRK, not LASIK, as I have corneas that are too thin for LASIK) and I blogged about it if you want to check out the posts:

Would love to have a beer when you are in Tokyo and pick your brain about life as a nomad! If you are interested, drop me a line.

  8. Coming to the Andaman Coast, Gary? Currently on Koh Lanta, then Railay.

  9. Kelsi says:

I get shivers reading about teeth cleanings in Thailand. The most painful teeth cleaning of my life happened in BKK last January and I know I’m in for another one come February. Shudder. That being said, all other medical work I’ve had done in Thailand has been just fine and the bills are cheap cheap compared to the States.

    • Curious to know why your cleaning was so painful, and where it was done. Are you saying that you’re going back to the same dentist? Why, why, why? Also wondering where you’ve had your “other” medical work done…if you’d care to share. Krystina

  10. I’ll be back in BKK by the end of the month, would love to meet up with you … as a newcomer to overseas travel and blogging, I’d love to hear what you have to say on SE Asia.

Right now, I’m in Koh Chang, what an island paradise, not overrun by thousands of tourists (though growing, as evidenced by the bandsaw whining from the construction site across the street!)

  11. I’m not in Bangkok but I am in San Francisco. If you’re actually staying here for a night or two, let me know–some of us local travel bloggers/Tweet-Ups were planning a travel happy hour/meet-up, so we could try and do it while you’re here if it works out!
