Photo Essay : Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island might just be the most beautiful place on Earth. If not, it is certainly in the running. Home of the world’s southernmost coral reef it is located almost 500 miles off the eastern coast of Australia, Lord Howe is a little visited part of New South Wales. To give you an idea of how special the island is, only 400 visitors are allowed on the island at any one time and there is no mobile phone service anywhere on the island. The islanders have chosen to keep it turned off. It is a place where people introduce themselves as a 3rd or 4th generation islander and everyone knows everyone else.

Getting to Lord Howe is not easy. The only transportation is small propeller plane and the tickets are rather expensive. Nonetheless, it should be on your list of places to visit if you are ever in Australia. Of the few travelers I know who have visited, all have listed Lord Howe as one of their favorite places.

Beautiful photos of a place high on my “next time in Oz”-list. Another gorgeous island is Norfolk Island, also off the coast of Australia (but a little easier to get to), but with a wonderful and quirky history to boot (Britain’s worst penal colony AND home of the descendants of the Bounty mutineers).
