Valencia Update

I’ve arrived in Valencia after 24 hours of airports and airplanes and have been kept exceptionally busy since.

I’ve been taking photos, exploring the city, eating fantastic food and met some great people. I’ll be writing in more detail as soon as I can find some free time to go through my photos and write a longer piece.

Some of the highlights:

  • The Valencia Cathedral has the supposed Holy Grail. (thanks to Spud Hilton for the tip)
  • I’ve had paella for lunch both days I’ve been here. It’s a rice dish which is the signature dish of Valencia.
  • I got a tour of the Palau de Les Arts, which I honestly believe is the most impressive building on Earth. I’m not exaggerating when I say that.
  • I visited my 111th World Heritage Site: La Lonja de la Seda de Valencia.

Today I’m going to speak at a tourism industry event (which is why I’m here. They paid for my trip to Spain.) and will be moving down the coast over the weekend to Benidorm and Alicante.

I also want to give a shout out to Lillie Marshall of AroundTheWorldL.com who was in Spain and came up to Valencia to hang out with me. She’s been great fun so far.

  1. I’m a big fan of architecture and human made marvels. I spend a lot of time looking at those than natural settings.

  2. Santiago Calatrava is one of favourite achitects. He did the new Liege train station in Belgium. I’m not exaggerating when I say it is one of the most impressive train stations in the world.

  3. Hi Gary:

  4. Hey Palau de les Arts truly is an amazing building..!! Waiting for you to upload the pics of the structure as well as the Cathedral with the Holy Grail..(unbelievable!!)..

Spain has great architecture in most of its cities.

  5. Hi Gary!

I am from Valencia and was rencently there too, took some time to visit the City of Arts and Sciences which is one of the most interesting structures I have seen around the world. I have a post on it with some good photos and tips for interested here: http://www.maitravelsite.com/europe/museum-future-valencia-spain/

Gary, if you go back to Valencia don’t miss the restaurant that offers the best paella in the city. It is called Casa Clemencia, cooked in traditional wood stoves and is not particularly expensive. They even have take-away at 3.5 €! It is in Avenida Primado Reig number 179- don’t miss it if you can!

    Have fun,

    Federico

PS If you are in Benidorm now make sure you visit the nearby Penon de Ifach

  6. I’m from Elche, Alicante.
I just meet your blog. There is in the spanish newspaper.
I only want to say, that this weekend there are many tradicional “partys” here, in Spain. I think You should ask for them. You have to see a spanish party!

PD: My town, has the bigger palm forest in Europe. Maybe you want to see it.

    • I will be in Alicante on Monday! I’m currently in Benidorm. I will be visiting the palm forest when I am there.

  7. Gary, that truly is one impressive Palace of Fine Arts (named, apparently, for Queen Sofia). Also, thanks for mentioning Lillie Marshall – I have read her blog and bookmarked it. Her description of the mosque-turned–cathedral in Cordoba is marvelous – it’s another very impressive structure. Evidently part of it resembles a lovely, well-frosted, wedding cake because Lillie admonishes visitors to NOT lick the walls. LOL

  8. gary,
I was looking at your video of Israel memorial day. I lived in israel for about 15 years, and by far the most meaningful day of the year was this day with the incredible siren and the people’s reaction. Thanks for putting it up !

  9. Gary,
Thanks for you thoughts. I am a high school teacher in Virginia and my class enjoyed looking at and reading your blog about your travels. We also used your blog as an excellent example of a blog. We are blogging too!
