Home For Christmas….And Sick As A Dog

A quick update to explain where I’ve been lately…

The last week of travel was brutal. I went from Bangkok to Tokyo to Honolulu to Seattle to San Francisco to Las Vegas to Minneapolis to Green Bay.

The two longest legs of those flights (Tokyo to Honolulu and Honolulu to Seattle) were both overnight, red-eye flights where I didn’t get any sleep. Throw in jet lag on top of that and I was exhausted.

In Las Vegas, my flight to Minneapolis was canceled and I had to sit for 3 hours in the baggage claim waiting for my bag to get taken off the canceled flight.

When I woke up the next morning in Las Vegas, my body decided that it had enough and I was sick.

Just to give you an idea, I spent almost all of Christmas day in bed sleeping. I have a headache, sore muscles, a very sore throat and I am tired all the time.

I am glad I was able to make it back to Wisconsin for Christmas. This is the first Christmas without my dad and I’m really glad I could be here for it, even if I was sick.

As a result of all this traveling and sickness, you may have noticed a serious lack of activity on the website. I have some very cool announcements and stories to post come 2011. Until then, I’ll probably just be hibernating trying to beat whatever has made me sick.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and with that, I’m going to take some more Nyquil and go back to bed.

  1. Feel better soon! It’s good you were about to be home for the holidays, though. I can’t wait to discover what your travel plans for 2011 are!

  2. So sorry to hear you were sick for Christmas, but very happy to hear you eventually made it home. Hope you’re feeling much better very soon. I got my first cold in a year just after Christmas so I feel your pain.

  3. Sorry to hear that you are not well. While in Vanuatu I became very ill wil malaria. Under an old Army bunker with a dirt floor, the natives nursed me back to enough strength to get me through the rain forest and near an air port. It took what seemed like days to get home, but finally I did arrive in Boston.

Then of course there was the trip to Fiji where I was chewed upon by scabbies…Now that was another fun flight home and days of isolation in the hospital….never thought about the poor bugger who sat in that seat on the next flight….SORRY!

    Get well!

  4. Sorry to hear you are sick! Jet lag is evil. I just read about a study done by a team at UC Berkeley that talked about the effects of jet lag on cognitive function and how the effects could last for up to a month. I hope you recover your health far sooner!!

What really helps me when I have a sore throat is slippery elm. They have slippery elm lozenges at stores like Whole Foods. My grandfather’s never-fail remedy was a shot of tequila, but I’m not sure I would recommend that one. Best wishes and hope you get well in time to ring in the new year!

  5. Sorry to hear you are sick, Gary. Just relax and get well. It’s time to take some time to do this.

Meanwhile, there is an interesting article in this month’s National Geographic about Cahokia. Do you remember we had a discussion about it and other Indian mounds? Enjoy!

  6. Hope you feel better. Have you ever tried the neti pot or colloidal silver? Those are my natural remedies for never getting sick. Happy holidays!

  7. Sorry to hear all of that Gary. Sometimes your body just tells you that you need to shut it down for a while. Really glad you listened to yourself and didn’t make it worse. Get better and have a great 2011.

  8. eeek! And I thought my flight from Auckland – LA – Toronto was bad! I made it home for Christmas as well and also have a cold. Hope you feel better and Santa was good to you!

  9. Welcome back to WI first of all, didn’t realize this was home to you too. :) Sorry you aren’t feeling well. There are 6 people in this house and we’ve had the stomach flu, one by one, for 2 weeks! I was the last to get it and was also sick just before Christmas. We cancelled Christmas visitors and Christmas dinner and are waiting until next week instead. Bummer. Hope you are on the mend!

  10. Wow, that sounds like a very stressful flight schedule..! Hope you’re back on your feet again soon, looking forward to hear the news!

  11. Yikes! Sorry to hear you are still sick!

What a crazy flight schedule back! Not that you want to hear this, but I know you took some Delta flights….did you know you could’ve gone BKK to TPE on KLM and then flown on a Delta coded China Airlines flight direct to SFO or LAX? Although not an official member of SkyTeam (yet), they have codeshare flights where you can still earn MQMs on Delta. That is my regular flight unless I take the true Delta flight from TPE through NRT and then to SFO or LAX I am sure w/the holidays, it was hard to get reasonably priced flights anyways (part of why I decided against going back). I would probably never want to travel again if I just did those flights you did! My worst was from Tahiti to LAX to Atlanta to AMS once and that about did me in since I basically spent 2 nights on the plane.

Hope you feel better soon and can enjoy NYE! Best wishes!
