North American National Park #18: Mammoth Cave Park, Kentucky

Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system in the world with over 400 miles (640 km) of surveyed cave. From a geologic standpoint, it is world wonder. From a photographic standpoint, it is one of the least interesting caves I’ve visited. Unlike most caves, the walls of Mammoth are rather smooth and you don’t see as many stalactites or stalagmites which you see in others. They do exist (as you can see in the photo) but they are few and far between.

Mammoth Cave is one place I would love to return to, to photograph. Like Wind Cave (but unlike Carlsbad Caverns) tripods are not allowed in Mammoth Cave which makes photography difficult to say the least.

Are walking sticks allowed? You could put the right sort of screw on top of a walking stick, turning it into a stealth-unipod…
