Exploring Wisconsin

Milwaukee Museum of Art

Milwaukee Museum of Art

This week I’m going to be doing something a bit different. I’m going to spend it exploring my home state of Wisconsin.

Usually when I’m in Wisconsin I’m here to relax and catch up on work. Like most people, I’ve never visited many of the significant things in my state because I felt like it was always something I could do. I’ve seen this time and time again all over the world. Locals never visit attractions they live next to. I’ve met people who have lived their whole life in New York, for example, and have never been to the Statue of Liberty.

This week I am going to rectify that problem by driving around the state for five days.

Monday, I’m starting in Green Bay, which is only about 25 miles from where I grew up. I’ll be taking a tour of Lambeau Field as well as visiting the Packer Hall of Fame.

Tuesday, I’ll be in Milwaukee to visit the Harley-Davidson Museum, do a brewery tour, watch the wings on the art museum close, and attend a Brewers game.

Wednesday, I’ll be heading to the capital of Madison to take a tour of the capital building and visit some of the Frank Lloyd Wright homes in the area and his studio Spring Green: Taliesin. (they will probably be put on the world heritage list in a few years).

Thursday I’ll be in LaCrosse and driving up the east side of the Mississippi River, taking photos of the bluffs.

Friday, I’ll be finishing the trip by heading to the north woods to the town of Cable.

I’m excited to do this and to share a region that most people know little about. You can follow along on Google+ and I’ll also be posting images to Facebook and Instagram.

Let me know your favorite thing to see or do in Wisconsin!

I have the same feeling :( I’m from Barcelona and I’ve never visited some touristic places in my city. When you’re abroad you wanna visit everything from there!

  2. It is a shame you will be so close to the Reservation and not stop by the museum. It is Native American Heritage Month and the Oneida Museum is very small. I see you are in Appleton. Not far away about 30 min drive from me. (I live on the Oneida Indian Reservation.) Also, only about 20 min from Lambeau Field.

We had Christmas in Wisconsin and loved it!
We are traveling the world – Mum and son and been going 14 months.

I do usually find that you dont really visit whats near to you very often. You will be surprised what is actually on offer.

  5. Jocy says:

Now that we’ve moved back to the US, we’re looking forward to exploring “home”… which begins actually with a trip to Wisconsin next month to visit my husband’s family.

  6. Zahid says:

Love it. “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” – Marcel Proust

  7. Zahid says:

Agreed. we all ignore local attractions which are important for other travelers. t

The museum is especially amazing! Definitely worth going to. It’s always great to discover new place that are near you!

I love it. We often miss some amazing things in our own cities and don’t notice until we become more mindful to our surroundings or simply make the effort. I’m looking forward to reading more about your explorations in Wisconsin. I plan to go sometime because I heard of a chapel of Joan of Arc there. It got shipped from France to Wisconsin and she prayed there before she got captured or something. I don’t know all the details but it sounded interesting. That’s enough reason for me to go to Wisconsin and I’m sure I’ll find more reasons after your blog posts about the state.

You have just done the right thing. Exploring your own place for me would be the first thing to do before exploring other places. If one can spend more money exploring different places why not spend lesser exploring your own if there’s better places to visit. We should not be an alien to our own place, there would be a lot of travellers dying to be where we are living at to have their vacation and appreciate the natural beauty in it. I am glad that you have featured your own place Wisconsin, and you were so proud of it.

I love pretending I’m a tourist in my home region. Sometimes it takes an overseas friend to spur me on though!
