My 10 Favorite Historical Sites

Posted by on March 17, 2011

This the fourth installment in a series for my 4th Travelversay Celebration.

This was an extremely difficult list to compile. How do you evaluate how historic something is? Where do you put the boundries around it. Most European and Asian capitals have a very deep history, so trying to pick and choose was hard.

The list is biased towards more ancient history, which is why cities like London and Paris were left off. You will also find no American or Canadian cities on the list, even though places like Boston and Quebec City are quite historic. I have visited several archeology digs, but left those off as well because there is very little to see when you visit.

My 10 Favorite SCUBA Sites

This the third installment in a series for my 4th Travelversay Celebration.

Of all the lists in this series, this is the one that I might be the least confident about. I’ve done a fair amount of diving (about 100 dives) but I am a far cry from some of the real professionals out there. I could see how a real dive pro could put together a list as good or better than mine without any overlap.

I also do not have many photos to show for this list. I’ve only taken underwater photos on a few of my dives. The cost and weight of underwater photography gear is too heavy and expensive for me to justify carrying around.

Learning to SCUBA dive is one of the best things I’ve done since I started traveling.

My 10 Favorite Museums

Posted by on March 15, 2011

This the second installment in a series for my 4th Travelversay Celebration.

One of my favorite activities is visiting the great museums of the world. Unlike my list of favorite cities which had a heavy Asia/Pacific bent, this list has a heavy European bent. The simple fact is, Europe has far better museums than Asia.

I’ve researched other list of great museums in the world and there seems to be at least a general consensus on what are the top museums. I’ve been able to visit most of the museums and my list isn’t radically different.

I don’t have photos for many of the museums because some museums do not allow photography and I often just never think to take a photo of the exterior of a museum. (more…)

My 10 Favorite Cities

Posted by on March 14, 2011

This is the first installment in a series for my 4th Travelversay Celebration.

I have no idea how many cities I’ve been to during my travels, but if you just include cities where I’ve slept at least one night, it has to be in the hundreds. These cities have stuck out in my mind for some reason over the years. This is probably one of the hardest lists I had to compile because there were so many other cities that were worthy of mention.

10) Noumea, New Caledonia

Noumea is easily the most beautiful city in the Pacific outside of New Zealand. It is almost like a city on the French Rivera which has been transported to the Pacific. Walking around Noumea and its several harbors was a great experience. The biggest downside to Noumea is the cost. They use the Pacific Franc as their currency. It is now pegged to the Euro, but when I was there it was floating separately. (more…)
