NYC Travel Meetup Recap, Chicago Meetup announcement

Folks at the meetup

Folks at the meetup. I'm the dufus with the big grin.

I had a great time at the NYC meetup being able to put names to faces I’ve only seen on Twitter. Nomadic Matt was there and his friend from Germany. I had previously met Matt twice before in Bangkok where he was living last year. He runs the successful NomadicMatt.com travel blog as well as several other blogs. Michaela from Briefcase to Backpack was there, but I didn’t get to talk to her that much. We did however have lunch a few days earlier near Union Square and were able to walk around some of the Village. Her, her husband and Sherry Ott (currently in Mongolia) run Briefcase to Backpack which is a site which offers advice for people taking career breaks and sabbaticals.

There were also people who were just starting their around the world adventures. Jason and Corina are from Winnipeg and happened to be in New York. They run the blog in2travel and will be in Ecuador by the time I write this. You can follow them on Twitter at @in2travels.

Jason and Aracely are going to be starting their trip in August. They will also be starting their trip in Latin America. You can follow their adventures as they get going at TwoBackpackers.com. They hope to be doing video from the road and have put a lot of effort into their blog and will be worth following.

Also showing up were Ben (an amateur photographer/engineer from Atlanta who is in NYC visiting), Sung (a physics student at NYU from South Korea @bookhling), and Emily (works in the luxury tourism business @westaby).

The restaurant we met at was a small, vegetarian Indian restaurant. I showed up about 30 min early to make sure there was space, which was a good idea. They managed to move some tables for us and everything worked. I ordered the dosa, which is really just a giant, thin pancake.

I’ll be in Chicago this Saturday, July 25 if anyone in the windy city would like to meet up. There is a travel blogger conference on Sunday and the BlogHer convention going on as well, so plenty of bloggers should be in town. I’ll be at Mother Hubbards sports bar on 5 W. Hubbard St. in Chicago. It is somewhat centrally located so if you are there for the conference it should be easy to get to. Everyone is welcome and you don’t have to be a blogger. I hope to show up at 7pm.

Wow – I wasn’t even there and I got a mention…wish I could have been there sharing a beer and travel tales. However I was in the middle of creating more travel tales by drinking and eating sour dairy products and milking camels! Sounds like you all had a great time!
