Having a bit more time now to catch up on line.
Twas fun to have you around.
Learning new English here...I thought it was the earlier train that was late I talked and pushed you in, but glad they didn't kick you out lacking the ticket. How weird indeed.

Shame you had a bad trip - but have to echo Joshua and Linda, I'd take Eurostar London-Paris over a budget flight. Also done London-Ghent via Brussels, booked through the Eurostar site, and it went swimmingly.

In fairness, location and personal preference come into it - I'm a Londoner who likes travelling by train. It's a much less compelling service for those in the north of the UK, because they face hours of travelling to London beforehand (that's right, folks, we Brits don't have a truly high-speed north-south connection...).

Sad you had a difficult journey. We've used the Channel Tunnel a couple of times, and found it SO MUCH EASIER than catching a budget flight, mostly because getting to/from the airport in London is expensive, difficult and quite a long trip. You're right, you do need to treat catching the Eurostar like a plane for the customs side of things, but being able to go from the centre of the city to the centre of the city is really really worth waiting around for an hour (which you'd do at the airport anyway). Enjoy London!

Sorry this is unrelated to this specific post.....

I saw an article on cnn.com that mentioned your site a few months ago.....I and I have just now finished reading your travel blog in its entirety. While a trip around the world is not something that I see happening for me, my husband and I are committed to at least going to each continent together for some exploring, and I have totally been living vicariously through you. I am also an amateur photography enthusiast, and I LOVE your pictures. My most favorite is the picture of the Southern Cross at night. Keep up the good work!!

I've done London->Paris and back on the Eurostar booked ahead of time through Eurorail and never had a problem. It's far quicker than taking yet two more trains from the center of each town to the airports. And typically cheaper. It's also more comfortable, they don't care about your baggage. You are correct though, there is some security and passport control to go through, so you do need to be a little early. That's too bad you expierence was not so good as I would always advise the train over a plane for London to Paris, if nothing else for simplicity.
