Kids playing cricket. Melbourne, Australia

Kids playing cricket. Melbourne, Australia

One of the biggest ways in which Australia and North America differ is in the sports they play. Australians are a sports hungry people, but what they play will leave most Americans with a blank stare. Over time I’ve come to understand the basics for rugby (Union and League), AFL (Aussie rules football) and cricket. My knowledge goes far enough to know what is going on during a game, but not so much as to get into a real discussion with anyone on the subject. FUN FACT: Did you know that the United States lost to Canada in the first international cricket match in 1844? After that, both countries decided they had enough with the game and never looked back.
