A divine shot… just curious though, exactly how many world’s largest sitting Buddha’s are there in the world?! I came across one in China, I heard about one in Sri Lanka and Bangkok and now I see you found him in HK!

I’m pretty sure this is the biggest. For starters, it was only built about 10 years ago. It is hollow on the inside constructed steel ribs on the inside. It is similar to the Statue of Liberty in its construction.

There are other big buddhas with other qualifiers on it. Largest reclined buddha, largest solid buddha, etc. Some are carved in mountains.

Here is more information on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tian_Tan_Buddha

Any idea if there’s a difference between sitting Buddha and seated Buddha? I know the seated Buddha in Leshan is the largest in the world and definitely larger than the one in HK.

  4. What a magical place. Interesting notes on the construction as well.

    ChinaMatt:

upon further research, the Leshan Buddha is bigger, but it is carved out of a mountain. The Hong Kong buddha is freestanding. It is sort of like comparing Mount Rushmore to the Statue of Liberty I guess.

I did read something about a 500ft Buddha being built in China which will be bigger than everything.

I visited HK in March of this year and visited Tian Tan Buddha. He was magnificent to say the least at. 80 Feet tall and 250 tons of bronze. Very impressive.
