Gary,

Thank you for taking time to explain the steps in detail. We are going on a cruise in a couple weeks. But we probably won't be doing any diving this trip. I am thinking about it and probably will do it when I go back to visit my family in Thailand. :) I love your photo!!

You actually can fail the course. The signing bit only works for the quizzes and the knowledge reviews. For the final test you need at least 75%. Thing is that you can repeat the test as often as you want. Not many people ever fail, I've had 3 out of about 500 students.

It's always a good idea to get your own mask. Nothing worse than having a leaky mask on a dive.

As for the books, that's a newish PADI rule. The thing here is that you don't have to buy the book, you just need your own during dive training. So don't write anything into the knowledge review parts and sell it on after the course. Good thing about dive schools is that there's always enough students around.

Unless you live in a hot country with nice underwater scenery I would always recommend to do the course while travelling. First impressions and all.

You actually can earn credits from the Discover Scuba Diving towards your Open Water Course and the Scuba Diver Course is actually the first 2 days of your Open Water. It's quite easy to upgrade as well.

Nice article, Gary

I went into a barbershop in Fiji and told the barber to use the clippers and to do it short. He clearly was only moderately fluent in English, so rather than use a 1 or 2 setting, he used a 0, which is pretty much the bald setting.

Once you get a hunk of your head bald, you are pretty much committed to going all the way, else you just have a bare patch of skin on your head.

If you get the hotel, that is very cheap!

I'm considering taking my rescue training in Thailand because of the cost. It is a 5 day course and more expensive than most.
