Read the book by Stanley Coleman Jersey titled: Hell's islands.
The coastwatch U.S. mini base was at the eastern lake end (Tigoa)
I wish to know the names of the U.S. officers who stayed on Lake Tegano during this short time. Refer to this book. I could not see it cos the page was ommitted
Can anyone find this book then check with military records.
Also Captain Rubin Iden who was dead , buried here in Rennell then later dug up and his body was taken back to U.S.

Your trip to Rennell encapsulates everything that's rewarding - and sometimes exasperating - about the Solomons. Light planes, rubber time, running out of cash, people who genuinely welcome visitors... Only a three hour flight from Australia but light years removed.

Oh wow! my partner and I went to Rennell in Dec 2006 and we were obviously the first foreigners there for a loooong time. Our lives were in the hands of these people and they looked after us so well. We didn't have the car problems you had - we had the white car. We did stay in the lodge with the delightful Prince, found the endemic snake, went tilopia fishing, free dove the WWII planes in the lake, got bitten by the fire ants, sleeping on the mats on the floor, eating coconuts and generally spent a week that changed my view of life and the universe and the options available to me living as professionals in a big Australian capital city.
I'm so glad you loved it as much as we did

I do have a contact who is the head of their World Heritage committee. I don't think he, or anyone else, is an expert on the aircraft per se, but I can send you his contact info. He would be the the best person to contact.

Hi Gary. Sounds like a fantastic trip. Do you have a contact on the island that knows more about these aircaft?

I know of the PBY planes you speak of. They are on the end of the lagoon. I read about them before I arrived on Rennell and asked about them.

I met and heard of no one who wanted to restore the planes. In fact, I would be astonished if anyone on Rennell would take the time to restore them. Given the other issues on the island, restoring old American war planes seems very low on the priority list. Also, getting materials to the island to recover the craft would be extremely expensive.

I know there was a naval battle fought near Rennell, but I don't know if there was an occupation of the island by the Japanese.
